Konark, Mitravana
Son of Lord Krishna ‘Samba’ has been cursed by his father
for disguised Krishna’s one of the wife named Nandini. When Krishna came to
know about it he cursed Samba to be inflicted with Leprosy. After requesting
several times to his father he got the solution by worship to Surya. He
worships Surya for 12 years to cure his aliment; Samba underwent penance during
the period in Mitravana near the shores of Chandrabhaga.
As a
tradition in Odissa this day is celebrated as Samba Dashami on the 10th
day of the Shukla Paksha of Paush (As per English calendar it lies during the
December month). People not only from India but from different parts of the
world come to celebrate the occasion here and most importantly during this day
only water flows in the river bank underneath and it’s considered as a holy
water.
Due to this legend of Konark, Mitravana has also acquired
holy significance.
Story behind Black Pagoda

Narasimhadeva in 1250 AD. It had great
aura that comes from two powerful magnets set to have built into the tower – it
was powerful to hover king’s throne hover in the air. Many a ship distracted because
of the powerful magnets actually forced to be sailing off the coast. That’s why
European Mariners named it as Black Pagoda.
Story of Dharmapada
Narashimadeva directed to build the massive architectural
monument named Konark Sun Temple. The shape he described was has to be Sun god riding
in his chariot.
Bishu Maharana was the head of this entire project. It took
12 year to complete and with the effort of 1200 craftsmen. As the end of 12
year approached Narashimadeva threatened Bishu Maharana to complete the entire
task by that night (Successful completion would be setting up the Mangal Kalash
on the top of the Temple) otherwise he will kill all of them.
The task was almost impossible because of the shape and
height of the temple. All craftsmen feared of their own life whereby Dharmapada
(Son of Bishu Maharana, 12 year old then) completed to put the Mangal Kalash on
the top of it.
All craftsmen were yet not sure if the king (Bishu Maharana)
hear that this has been done by Dharmapada what would be his reaction. He might
can be furious can kill all of them for not taking the onus and a child had
done it. Dharmapada heard his father is in distress and he jumped off from the
top of the temple and killed himself and settled the debate, by his action all
craftsmen life was saved but Konark Temple marked insane and King decided not
to do any Puja inside the temple.
